The Hybrid Vehicle Break Even Calculator

We often hear commercials and experts explaining to us how much gasoline we can save by switching over to a hybrid vehicle. This calculator will actually solve for the actual number of miles you will have to put in the hybrid car to make it worthwhile, purely in dollar terms.

The methodology is easy, we suppose that you have two options for your vehicle purchase:

  1. a traditional gasline vehicle for price $X,
  2. a hybrid vehicle for price $Y and receive a tax rebate of $Z.

Now, if you supply the gasoline price and the fuel efficiency for both vehicles, the calculator calculates the number of miles you will need to drive in order to break even. Any additional miles you put over the break even point will save you actual money with the hybrid.
