Thanks to the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act, a 2003 amendment to the Fair Credit Reporting Act, it is now law that consumers can request and obtain a free credit report from each of the three major consumer credit reporting agencies (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion) once every 12 months.

You have a RIGHT to a free credit report from each agency.
All three reports do not have to be ordered at the same time. Doing so allows you to compare the information on the three, but spacing it out to get one, say, every four months allows you to keep track of new changes.
