The $20 Front Desk Tipping Trick
Written by C. Li

I came across this sitea few weeks ago and tried the tip trick on our Vegas trip.  Amazingly, it worked and we ended up getting a nice room upgrade for $20.  You don’t need to be a hustler.  Just be polite and do it professionally – i.e., with a straight face.  The recipe is simple:
  1. When you go to the front desk for check-in, they will ask you for your driver’s license and a credit card.
  2. Put a $20 bill in between your driver’s license and you credit card.
  3. Ask the clerk if there is any complimentary room upgrade today.
  4. Most clerks will understand this gesture.  If they can’t offer you the upgrade, they will generally give you back the money.

Notes:

  • It has been noted that this works especially well in places like Las Vegas where hotel rooms are plenty.
  • Avoid the rush hours as there might be overbooks and difficult for them to know if an upgrade is available.  Try this in the evenings.
  • For multiple night stays, it might require a higher tip.
