A Comprehensive Guide to Buying Your Insurance

"There are worse things in life than death. Have you ever spent an evening with an insurance salesman?"

- Woody Allen

Welcome to our guide on buying insurance!  The idea of insurance can be traced to ancient Chinese traders and Babylonian traders in the 3rd and 2nd millenia B.C. In ancient China, traders would transport goods to markets on boats, and inevitably one boat would sink along the way. Ancient Chinese traders would spread their goods amongst numerous boats so that if one boat sank, any one family would lose only a small portion of their goods. This loss was spread amongst numerous families. With the Babylonians, a merchant who received a loan to fund his shipment would pay the lender an additional sum for the lender's guarantee that the loan would be canceled if the merchant's shipment was lost or stolen at sea.  For a nice  introduction to insurance, you can read Michael Bar's article An Intruduction to Insurance.

Today, numerous types of insurance exist to cover a wide range of situations such as business insurance, pet insurance, travel insurance, pollution insurance, or even the Federal Depository Insurance Corporation, to name a few. Insurance companies profit through underwriting and investing the premiums collected from the insured.  Using statistics and a large assortment of data, insurers determine the likelihood that the insured will file a claim, thereby determining the premium from this likelihood. Factors such as age, gender, life style, location, medical record, and driving record are taken into consideration when determining the premium the insured will pay.
