I concur that this actually works. I remember getting below dealer invoice price when I emailed a handful of dealers asking for the same car. You can do even better if you email them towards the end of the year when they are clearing out the "older" models. Most of the time it's the same car anyways.

This tactic is not something completely new but the part about communicating with a student email address is smart. You also need to remember that students are some of the most educated yet least awared individuals when it comes to the finance. They will get a good price on the car and yet pay over 12% APR in the financing department.

This is very powerful logic. Psychologically speaking, people will expect other dealers to be offering their best prices so they follow suit. This will work elsewhere too.

This will come in handy. Is it better to use a service like Carsdirect or Edmunds or just to email the dealers directly?

I like this example of practical economics. This can be used as a nice economic illustration at parties.
